How Much Does a Deck Cost in San Antonio?

If you’re looking to have a deck installed in your San Antonio home, you’re probably curious as to how much it might cost. In this article, we’ll highlight some numbers that might help you better understand the scope of your project, and hopefully move you forward in the decision to transform your backyard!

So what can I expect to pay? Well, it depends on a variety of factors, but a typical size for a deck is about 300 square feet. Not sure how many square feet your project is? That’s okay! Finding out your square footage is as easy as measuring the width and the length of your deck and multiplying those numbers together i.e. 15 x 20 = 300 sq ft. This baseline number gives us everything we need to come up with a potential price.

Once you have your square footage, you multiply it by your desired materials price i.e. 300 x 27 = 8,100, and that gives you a good ballpark number of what you can expect to pay for your new deck. Some good baseline numbers are $22 a sq ft for Treated Pine, $27 a sq ft for Cedar. And $32 a sq ft for Composite. Not sure which material to choose? You can read our other blog post here, to make an educated decision.

Another thing to consider when doing the math on your project is whether or not you’ll need a handrail. If your project is 30 inches above grade, you will NEED a handrail, according to Texas Build Code. The handrail is calculated using linear feet instead of square feet. So if your project is 15 x 20, you would do 15 + 20 + 15 = 50. If you are building a treated deck, you obviously want to use a treated handrail which is $40 a ln ft, the same is true for cedar which is at $50 a ln ft. Building a Cedar deck with 50 ln ft of handrail tallies to 50 x 50 = 2,500.

Using the equations here with your own project puts you in a pretty good ballpark in terms of expecting what to pay, and gives you a good indication of when someone is probably charging too much, or too little, which can both harm you in the long run.
